Rich Martin - My Wonder River Story

About Rich Martin — Founder of Wonder River
I am a qualified teacher (BA, MA, PGCE, MEd in Educational Leadership) with over twenty years’ experience working with young people across a wide range of educational settings. Most recently, I was Head of English and Head of Year 8 at Moulsford Prep School in South Oxfordshire. I have taught from Year 3 to Sixth Form, and have always had a particular interest in confidence, personal development and pastoral care. I am also a home-educating parent, which has given me a valuable perspective on the different ways young people learn, develop and discover their strengths.
Time and again, I have seen how a lack of confidence, rather than a lack of ability or desire, can hold young people back. However, I have also seen how confidence can be built — through BODY and MIND. Encouraging young people to move and be active is an important first step in building confidence, but equally important is having the time and space to talk, be challenged, practise, reflect and discover what they are truly capable of.
After seeing so many young people struggle with confidence, and having the privilege of witnessing how much can change when they begin to believe in themselves, I was inspired to create Wonder River. I wanted to make helping young people build confidence my purpose — to wake up each morning knowing that my work could make a genuine difference to the journey of a young person.
Whether through sports, confidence workshops, online programmes, home education sessions, mentoring or tuition, my aim is simple: to help young people discover their strengths, embrace challenge and grow in confidence.
I live in South Oxfordshire with my wife, Sally, and our three children. Family life — full of sport, adventure, learning and home education — continues to shape my belief that every young person deserves the opportunity to grow, develop and flourish.
